Representatives of 19 Lebanese expatriate groups recently met with Her Excellency Mirna Khawly, Lebanese Ambassador to Australia, in a key discussion on strengthening the role of the Lebanese diaspora and addressing issues affecting Lebanese citizens living abroad.
The meeting focused on guaranteeing voting rights for Lebanese expatriates, ensuring that citizens abroad can vote in their registered constituencies on an equal footing with residents in Lebanon. Advocates emphasized that empowering the diaspora to participate in national elections reinforces democratic values and strengthens the connection between Lebanon and its global community.
In addition to voting rights, the discussions addressed challenges faced by Lebanese citizens overseas, including the renewal of passports and official documents. Both the Ambassador and expatriate representatives explored strategies to make these services more efficient, transparent, and accessible.
The World Lebanese Cultural Union (WLCU) – AU & NZ was represented by a delegation of leaders, including:
- Carine Khoury, Head of Electoral Affairs
- Pierre El Sokhn, Treasurer and Head of Diplomatic Affairs, Geographic Regional Council (GRC)
- George Salloum, President, WLCU Canberra State Council
- Widad Rahme, GRC Social Affairs Advisor
This initiative highlights the WLCU’s commitment to defending the rights of Lebanese expatriates, monitoring national issues, and strengthening collaboration with Lebanese embassies around the world. By engaging directly with the Lebanese Ambassador to Australia, the WLCU ensures that the voice of the Lebanese diaspora remains influential in shaping Lebanon’s democratic and social future.
