Before you start

All children must be legally registered in Lebanon before you can register your divorce.

Required documents

Bring the originals and copies of all documents to your appointment.

1. Australian divorce order and its Arabic translation

The original Australian court divorce order, and its translation into Arabic by an accredited translator.

  • Each of the two documents must be authenticated separately by DFAT.
  • Use standard authentication, not an Apostille. Book your authentication appointment on the DFAT website.

2. Lebanese family civil extract (بيان قيد عائلي)

It must show the name of the person the applicant is married to and is divorcing.

3. A representative living in Lebanon

Appoint a Lebanese person living in Lebanon to legally represent you in registering your divorce. Provide:

  • A printed copy of the representative’s Lebanese ID, front and back.
  • The representative’s address in Lebanon and mobile number.

4. Prepaid return envelope

A self-addressed, prepaid or stamped envelope, brought at the time of your application.

Standard authentication, not Apostille

The divorce order and its Arabic translation each need DFAT standard authentication. Do not use an Apostille.

How to apply

  1. At your appointment, bring all the documents above (originals and copies), including both authenticated documents (the original and the translation). The Embassy sends them to Lebanon.
  2. When you lodge the documents at the Embassy, you sign a special power of attorney for your chosen representative so they can complete the process.

Important

  • Either spouse may, individually, request the registration of a divorce granted in Australia with the relevant registries in Lebanon. Neither party may claim lack of knowledge or consent: registering the divorce in Lebanon confirms and declares an existing, established legal fact rather than creating it, so it does not depend on the consent of either party.
  • Before you can register your divorce, all children must be legally registered in Lebanon.
