Who can apply
In Lebanon, nationality by marriage is legally limited to a foreign woman married to a Lebanese man. A foreign husband of a Lebanese woman does not acquire Lebanese nationality through marriage alone, as Lebanese nationality law does not grant this right on the basis of marriage.
Conditions
The basic conditions for acquiring Lebanese nationality by marriage:
- The wife is a foreign national and the husband is Lebanese.
- The marriage is duly registered in the Lebanese civil status records.
- A full year has passed since the marriage was registered in the civil status records.
- The wife submits an application. Nationality is not granted automatically without her request.
Requirements
Bring the originals and a hard copy of each document to your appointment.
1. Marriage documents
- The original Lebanese family civil extract (Family Ikhraj Kaid, بيان قيد عائلي) for the husband, showing the marriage has been registered in Lebanon for more than one year. Must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lebanon.
- A true copy of the marriage certificate issued in Lebanon, proving the marriage is registered in Lebanon. Must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lebanon.
2. Wife’s identity
- A colour copy of the wife’s valid passport, authenticated by the issuing country: the Australian Passport Office for Australian passports, or the issuing country’s embassy or consulate for other passports.
- A valid visa or citizenship.
- Wife of Syrian background: a recent Syrian civil extract (بيان قيد سوري حديث), authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Syria, then by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants in Lebanon.
- Wife of Palestinian background: a recent Palestinian civil extract (بيان قيد فلسطيني حديث), authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants in Lebanon.
3. Wife’s birth certificate
- Born in Australia: the original birth certificate issued by the Births, Deaths and Marriages registry, translated into Arabic. The original and the translation must be authenticated by DFAT.
- Born outside Australia: the original birth certificate issued by the country of origin, translated into Arabic (if not already in Arabic). The original and the translation must be authenticated by that country’s embassy or consulate. If the translation was done in Australia, it can be authenticated by DFAT.
Authentication, not Apostille
All authentications must be standard authentications. An Apostille is not accepted.
